On the west side the highway goes through one valley name Kawuneeche Valley. This is really the headwater of the Colorado River. The area is home for much wildlife and the elk is particularly photogenic. I also saw moose and mountain ship, but no bear.
It snowed the first night I was there, June 21st, then it all melted just to snow again the following day and melt again. Made for a very pictures scenery and wet trails.
